Reading
We will continue using the Storytown Reading Basal this year. This textbook is full of texts that are at the second grade reading level and offers a variety of reading genres. We will also mix in some texts from our classroom library to learn varous focus skills and vocabulary. We typically meet with students in small groups two times a week for more targeted and individualized instruction. There will usually be a weekly story through which we will explore correlated focus skills in reading and grammar instruction and students will bring this text home each Wednesday to read to an adult.
Acclerated Reader
Students will also begin taking Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes this year. This online program tests student comprehension of independent reading and aides in the appropriate selection of student-selected texts. Students are required to pass 4 quizzes (80% or better) each quarter. **Please note that quizzes can only be taken at school.
Reading Calendars
Students are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes each night and recrod this on their monthly reading caledarn. October through May there will be a free pizza coupon awarded to those who meet the monthly goal.
